DESCRIPTION

Philip Craig sees himself as a painter of the world around him.  He has focused for the last ten years on his experience with the Canadian landscape, with familiar domestic interiors and with portraits of friends gathered in his home.

In this exhibition, the artist revisits his Tuscan experience of twenty years ago.  Seeing again the rolling hills, panoramic curving pathways aligned with cypress trees and scattered towns, Philip has produced a series of canvases that capture the essence of this historic countryside.  In paintings, "Montepulciano" and "Tuscan Landscape" soft muted colours, golden light and reduced abstracted forms create a fresh and vibrant immediacy.  "Street Cafe, Siena" and "Florentine Waiters"  paintings entice the viewers to participate and enjoy the cafe world.

Philip Craig was born in Ottawa in 1951.  After attending Sheridan College of Art and Design, he graduated in 1971.  Having spent a decade in Newfoundland, he returned with his young family to Ottawa and by 1986 made the total commitment to the act of painting.  He has produced exhibitions annually in Toronto since 1987 and has been sold into collections around the world.
