Play marks the first evening of the new Artists' Films series at
California College of Arts, featuring contemporary artists' film and
video and curated by artist Binta Ayofemi. Highlighting a roster of
international artists, each installment features a suite of original
works screened for one evening only.
The first Artists' Films evening, Play, features recent works by Ryan
Trecartin, Keren Cytter, Mickalene Thomas, and Assume Vivid Astro
Ryan Trecartin, the recipient of the 2009 Wolgin Prize, creates wildly
painterly videos that explore gender-shifting role-play in suburbia.
Trecartin's collaged videos evidence an experimental play that
constantly shifts and sheds language and persona.
Keren Cytter, with a current exhibition at the Tate Modern in London,
is known for breaking genre expectations while uncannily representing
social realities. Cytter's low-tech films move from murder mystery to
confessional couple melodrama with disarming ease. Cytter was recently
awarded the first Absolut Art Award 2009 for her cross-pollination of
art forms, engaging theater, performance, film, novels, and
Mickalene Thomas's slideshow of staged photographs celebrates the
body, identity, and beauty of Black Seventies' glamour, remixed and
transformed in an exquisite loop that fuels her videos, installations,
photographs, and paintings.
Assume Vivid Astro Focus (AVAF) is a Brazil- and New York–based
collective that constantly samples a seductive kaleidoscope of
Upcoming evenings in the CCA Artists' Films series 2009–10 will
include works by Omer Fast, Ai WeiWei, Patty Chang, Steve McQueen,
Pipolotti Rist, Paul Chan, The Yes Men, and Harun Farocki.
