Working at the River
Jim wrote a brief description of his reason for choosing his title, "Working at the River "
I chose the title "Working at the River " for my exhibit because for the last thirty plus years I have lived beside the Santa Fe River and have seen it go through many changes. When we first moved here many people referred to it as an arroyo because they had never seen it flow in all its glory. The river is often used as a metaphor for life. It ebbs and flows. Rivers are mentioned many times in the Bible. This river is alive and is making its way to the Rio Grande. With the foresight of the Mayor and city council this river has become a living river again. The banks are planted with willow, cottonwood and many wild flowers. I have watched with interest as the river trail developed. First with a few dog walkers and joggers into a veritable highway with bicycles and people walking briskly to work. The creation of many small dams which have the effect of slowing the flow but have also given it a voice. There is an increase in wild life as well. Birds, skunks, raccoons and coyotes have all made their way back to this river for sustenance. The river continues to flow by with no past or future but only a presence. It is here for all to see and hear. I am grateful for this opportunity to live and work beside this river of life. This river has given me inspiration to attempt work that is beautiful and that may affect people in some universal way. It has also given me materials which I recycle into my work.
