Leisure Class

On any given Saturday, the perimeter of Oakland’s newly revived and landscaped Lake Merritt gushes leisure and its minions: weekend bohemians with shiny banjos, eager-eyed GreenPeace solicitors in stiff vests, joggers, bicyclists, casual tight-rope walkers (this is not a joke), girls selling vintage clothes out of a car, smoking barbeques, children squealing and zipping by on all manner of wheeled contraptions, couples on blankets in flagrante, and a farmer’s market covering the gamut from fair-trade coffee to handmade jewelry, fruit, vegetables, and carefully stacked pyramids of fine cheese. Baldessari Prints

This summer the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco present a retrospective of John Baldessari’s prints at the Legion of Honor. Over 100 prints are included in the exhibition that spans the four decades of Baldessari’s post-painting period, 1970s to the present. The collection of prints is on loan from the Portland, Oregon-based collection of Jordan D. Klinger Etchings

Drawn from the collection of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Waking Dreams highlights the dream-like etchings of Max Klinger (1857–1920), the German Symbolist artist best known for his enigmatic portfolio Paraphrases About the Finding of a Glove (1881). In addition to his activities as a painter and sculptor, Klinger was one of the most imaginative graphic artists of the late 19th century.
