Boatmen and Peeled Folks: New Work by Sam Vaughan
Smokey's Tangle is proud to present "Boatman and Peeled Folk," a selection of recent work by El Cerrito artist Sam Vaughan.
His mastery of the human form and old-world drawing and painting techniques combine scientific illustration and religious iconography to reveal a twisted world of beasts, boatmen, and Madonnas with their skins peeled off, inviting the viewer deep into startling visions.
Vaughan conjures up references to multiple historical periods--including ancient Egypt, Renaissance, and underground comics--and adds a layer documenting his own personal history by embedding fragments of his daily notebooks in luminous glaze. The result is familiar and alien at the same time.
Opening Reception Friday, November 6 (part of Oakland Art Murmur) 6-10 pm. Closing reception Saturday November 21 6-10 pm
