In the new year, Southern Exposure is pleased to present two projects that remember and honor the past, interrogate the present, and envision our collective future in this changing city we call home.

Southern Exposure and Related Tactics Collective (Michele Carlson, Weston Teruya, and Nate Watson) invite 40 artists, writers, cultural producers, and civic-minded instigators to make short declarations or calls to action for 2016. The exhibition is the second iteration of our successful 4x40 group program, initiated in April 2015 with a marathon night of performance during which 40 artists each performed a four-minute piece in front of a live audience.

Declarations will manifest in four separate forms – posters designed by Shawn Tamaribuchi, postcards, buttons, and radical mapping – so that audiences may take away these messages as provocations or reminders to post at home, send to a friend, and wear on their body. With this gathering of provocations, we aim to spark a dialogue to carry us forward in the coming year.

In conjunction with the exhibition, on January 15 visitors will have the opportunity to participate in an edible screenprinting project with Imin Yeh and her collaborators Leah Rosenberg and Shilpa Rangnekar. Yeh is an interdisciplinary artist who often works with printmaking and paper.

The participating artists are Eliza O. Barrios, Jason Bayani, Congratulations Pine Tree, Jaime Cortez, Rodney Ewing, Cristal Fiel, Jacqueline Francis, Taraneh Hemami, Cliff Hengst, Angela Hennessy, Mei-ling Humphrey, Gisela Insuaste, Ernest Jolly, Nia King, John Jota Leaños, Kapiʻolani Lee, Rhiannon MacFadyen, Vero Majano, Michelada Think Tank, Omar Mismar, Channing Morgan, Mia Nakano, People’s Kitchen (Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik, Jocelyn Jackson, and Saqib Keval), Queer Rebels, Jerome Reyes, Maryam Rostami, Surabhi Saraf, Malik Shabazz, Pallavi Sharma, Bayeté Ross Smith, SOMA Pilipinas, Southern Exposure Youth Advisory Board, Truong Tran, Elizabeth Travelslight, Chris E.
