DESCRIPTION
Welcome in 2015 with a co-produced event celebrating two simultaneous exhibitions by Matthew Gottschalk. The evening begins at 5pm with a sidewalk chat between curator Kevin Chen and the artist in front of his new Grove Street window installation, The Higher We Rise, The Further Away I Seem. Then we'll stroll to Alter Space, where Gottschalk has just completed a residency, and view his current exhibition, This is Where Home Is.

Gottschalk's Grove Street installation includes playful structures and projections that emphasize the ever-changing nature of our urban landscape. Then look for the surprise. In his installations, Gottschalk is known for creating hand-carved wooden marionettes as protagonists. These marionettes serve as extensions of the artist, enabling him to playfully insert himself into a variety of landscapes and environments. A single marionette is placed into this installation, representing not only the artist but also the everyman.

At Alter Space, Gottschalk's puppet-like sculptures provide a glimpse into a puppet-maker's workshop, where the artist has displayed a series of hand-carved, wooden objects from just about every stage of the process, including wood scraps and full rendered marionettes.
