Rob Reger: The Kitchen Sink Show

August 8, 2014

For its final exhibition, Gallery Extraña proudly presents The Kitchen Sink Show, a solo exhibition featuring the works of mixed media artist Rob Reger.  This collection of original paintings, collages, and unique prints will be on display for one night only, Thursday, August 8th, from 7:00pm until 10:00pm.

Rob Reger’s sophisticated, surrealistic works explore the dark, entertaining, crossroads between desire and the absurd.  Using paint, collage, sculpture, illustration, and animation to achieve his humorous, often chilling creations, Reger touches upon primal aspects of the human condition resulting in what he calls Elegant Absurdity—where something exquisite meets something wrong.

Reger is the founder, owner, creative director, and president of Cosmic Debris - a design house based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Reger and Cosmic introduced the world to Emily the Strange, now the international icon for empowering young alternative girls (and people of all ages). Reger has been designing Emily for over two decades and has generated millions of fans of the character.

“Reger’s process is somewhat akin to that of a mad scientist”, remarks curator Johnny Sampson. With scalpel and brushstroke he stitches together his creations with surgical precision creating a macabre bestiary where the viewer supplies their own interpretation of the allegory.  “Reger expands the traditional boundaries of both painting and collage by using rotating canvases and animation to bring his nightmarish panoply of misfit creatures to life”.

Gallery Extraña (AKA Emily the Strange HQ) was founded by Emily the Strange creator Rob Reger and artist/curator Aimee Friberg. Its mission is to showcase contemporary, emerging, and mid-career artists with a special focus on talent from the East Bay. Gallery Extraña is committed to exhibiting eccentric, “strange,” and off-center work. Gallery Extraña is open by appointment only, please call 510-590-2393.
