DESCRIPTION

"Drawing on strong influences of both totemic imagery and portraiture, my series is assembled as pieces in transition. Marking the metamorphosis from ritual-based art to the modern belief of art as object, this ensemble of images showcases the portrait as a universal expression.

The mysticism surrounding totems, emblems linking human and animal lineage, can be found in a majority of cultures. The

power of these emblems is not just in their ferocious expressions and stark contrasts, but also in their ritualistic utility.

I paired this concept with portraiture, a giant in artistic subjects, for its complementary aesthetic. Often meant to distill the subject’s nature into their facial expression, portraiture is arguably the most individual of art forms. I believe this coupling of styles affirms both the individual’s expression and a universal cultural history.

“Portraits in Primary” is an exhibition of ancient influences produced in a modern fashion. Primarily, I juxtapose pieces done on paper with works done within smartphone applications".
