Master Class: South African Women Work on Paper
Bekris Gallery is pleased to present it first fall exhibition, Master Class: South African Women Work on Paper, which offers viewers the opportunity to enjoy several highly personal views of South Africa . Each artist included in this group exhibition works in other mediums, but each has made creation of works on paper a significant part of her artistic practice.
Claudette Schreuders explores the ambiguities of the search for an African identity through stories told with carved stocky figures whose solid stance and staring eyes “own” space in a very particular way. Her works on paper seem to be storyboards for her carved tales. Hanneke Benade creates exquisitely rendered portraits of people from another time. Each is done in a powdery pastel palette. Each seems calm and content at first glance, but on closer view is taut and tense. Penny Siopis is particularly interested in the ways that South African national history and personal memory intersect in visual narratives, Siopis became known for her ironical paintings focusing on questions of race and gender representation in public history. Her later bodies of works often deal with concerns of shame, violence and sexuality.
Deborah Bell is a painter, sculptor and printmaker. She frequently collaborates with other artists, among them Robert Hodgins and William Kentridge. Bell’s work is fundamentally informed by a personal search for the ‘self’. She often draws on spiritual imagery from a wide range of sources in her work. Moths, Judith Mason’s favorite insect, are central to her works included in this exhibition. Mason, a painter and graphic artist, has created delicate creatures caught in the process of transformation much like South Africa is today. Diane Victor is renowned for her draftsmanship. She makes sharp comments, often through satire, about social and political inequalities and complexities of South Africa.
