Taking its title from Chris Marker’s eponymous imaginary film-essay Soy Mexico (1965), this program features a rich selection of avant-garde cinema, ethnographic films and cine-poems from post-revolutionary Mexico, including fragments from Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary and unfinished Que Viva Mexico! (1931) and rarely seen footage from Miguel Covarrubias’ ethnographic film experiments. This screening will be held at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.
By juxtaposing works from the Mexican historical avant-garde with experimental films from contemporary Mexico—as in the revisionist experimental documentaries of Jesse Lerner and Olivier Debroise—Soy Mexico foregrounds emerging alternatives to revolutionary iconography and explores the ongoing unmaking of Mexican nationalist film aesthetics.
