The third and final rotation of Himalayan Pilgrimage explores the
theme of Sacred Space with a pair of magnificent large mandala pain
tings\, two-dimensional representations of a three-dimensional architectura
l space where a specific deity resides. Dating to the fourteenth and sixtee
nth centuries\, these paintings represent\, in vivid colors\, a cosmology o
f the deity Hevajra. Several other paintings on view depict historic teache
rs of various Tibetan orders.
A continuation of Himalayan Pilgrim age: Journey to the Land of Snows\, which explored the journey of B uddhism across several centuries and from India into Tibet\, and of Himalayan Pilgrimage: Liberation Through Sight i>\, which focused on artworks created as vehicles to enlightenment.
The works in this exhibition are on long-term loan from a single private collection.
