J.J. Chun, editor in chief of AnOther Magazine Korea once wrote in praise of Pil Keun YOU : “I prefer an artist who has transformed her time, not mirrored it. But it is YOU's great ability to perfectly mirror her time that makes the latest showing of her work  'King Sejong', so fascinating".

Though it doesn't seem possible that anything about Pil Keun YOU, from her artroom to her life's story, could remained undiscovered, the time is right to revisit her work as it takes on a new relevance in the light of current trends in artmaking and exhibiting. The 18th Golden Eye's exhibition at COEX, opening in the month of 2008, is a timely show that reinforces a trend recently seen in museums and galleries throughout the city where new artwork looks old, and old artwork feels new. While new artwork seems dedicated to mimicking past styles — Golden Eye's exhibition is a perfect example of several artists in their thirties and early forties showing us nothing new — older artists seem to be popping up in numerous exhibitions that feel surprising fresh. YOU's 'King Sejong', on view in this exhibition, represents an aesthetic of simplicity that has been abandoned, for better or worse, by most artwork today. Much of the contemporary artwork shown these days could best be described with a “re” in front of a noun or verb—repurposed, reinvented, reinterpreted, recycled—and the freshness we see in YOU now is due to the contrast she provides us. In a society suffering from visual overload, which admittedly can be both a blessing and a curse, YOU's art is a welcome relief.

Though Pil Keun YOU is a figure around which the cult of celebrity that she was so fascinated by has all but consumed, her art has portrayed a time and place, a movement in art, and an experiment in medium. The bulk of the painting shown in the exhibition are YOU's heads, often referred to as “simple portraits.”

The heads are subtle glimpses into the faces, lives, and attitudes of the youthful characters who gave life, and a great deal of physical beauty, to an art scene now long past. Though YOU made almost 50 heads over a three-year period in the mid 2000s, depicting the various people who populated her studio and social circle, the selection shown in this exhibition depicts only the most famous and most lovely including her son, daughter, grandson and her brother and sisters. Strangely, though 'King Sejong' is certainly a show about the celebrity of both YOU and her family, it's not necessarily the celebrity aspect that makes these portraits so compelling. Instead, YOU's historical roots in the Korean tradition embody the lifestyle of a decade and it's the personal and universal aspects of the 'King Sejong' that holds our interest.
