Each Form is a World

“Each form is free and individual. Each form is a world,” wrote Kazimir Malevich in his 1915 manifesto declaring Suprematism the future of painting. In that same year, Malevich went on to paint Black Square, what would become the iconic centerpiece of a brief Russian movement built upon a newfound attention to purity of form. Recent Rhode Island School of Design graduate Alex Markwith wrote his senior thesis on Malevich’s Black Square. It makes sense, when you look at Markwith’s work. Through Dark Windows -- a Technicolor Vision

Through construction, craft, pantomime, camerawork, and strong literary influences, artist Jonathan Ehrenberg creates a strange, beguiling world of melancholic fantasy captured within a moving image. A Shadow As Big As A Hat, Ehrenberg’s first solo show in New York exists in almost complete blackness except for three video screens that act as illuminated windows into unfolding atmospheres. On the left wall of the gallery, two small screens are mounted as a diptych. Sporting Good

Tucked away in the downstairs projection room at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, I found Shannon Plumb’s 2005 video Olympics (Track & Field)—eighteen minutes of unadulterated amusement. While the gallery’s main exhibition of sculptural works by Valerie Hegarty evokes a sense of cosmic doom, we are faced with less existential concerns when watching Plumb’s one-woman showcase of track and field competitions in a mock summer Olympics. Beauty Ensnared

          There is something of a revelation in Afruz Amighi’s (born Tehran, Iran 1974) debut New York solo show at Nicelle Beauchene gallery. First of all, the exhibition is stunning, there is absolutely no question about that. Second, it is transcendent: alternating between splendor and dramatic cast shadow, the installation transports you from the white cube of a gallery into the exotic world of this artist’s creation.
