DESCRIPTION

Located at the nexus of art and culture in New York City, the Hunter College Art Galleries are comprised of The Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Art Gallery, the 205 Hudson Street Gallery, The 119th Street East Harlem Art Gallery and The Artist’s Institute.  The galleries provide a space for critical engagement with art and pedagogy, bringing together historical scholarship, contemporary artistic practice, social awareness, and experimental methodology.  The galleries are committed to producing exhibitions, events, and scholarship in dialog with the intellectual discourse generated by the students in the integrated MA and MFA programs in the department of Art and Art History at Hunter College.

The Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Art Gallery located in the West Building of the main campus at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue focuses on historical and scholarly exhibitions and the 205 Hudson Street Gallery (which includes two spaces, the 5,000-square foot ground floor gallery on Canal, and a smaller experimental gallery on the second floor) is dedicated to presenting exhibitions that examine the impact of and the critical issues around contemporary art. Each semester, the 205 Hudson Street Gallery also hosts the MFA program’s thesis exhibitions.

HCAG presents exhibitions representing the interests and diversity of the faculty and student body.  Exploring a multitude of periods, media, themes and approaches, the shows support the intellectual pursuits of Hunter College's academic community.
