Reverberations that Prompt Meditation and Hand-Drawn Marks

An abstract graphite drawing hangs in a frame above a large wooden drafting desk. This mysterious composition beckons passersby into Cuchifritos gallery. Ambient sounds emanate a breathy soundtrack that envelops and draws visitors further in. This installation, “The First Line (Sounds for Drawing),” is one manifestation in a cycle of creation initiated by seasoned experimental sound artist Andrew Deutsch and preeminent multi-media artist Ann Hamilton. In A Relationship Left for Dead on the Lower East Side, the work by the ten artists in this group show revolves around a thick photo album on display in the gallery as the first object the viewer encounters.  The photo album, given to New York-based curator Bill Previdi by a friend who found it abandoned on the street somewhere in the Lower East Side, seems to record the life and relationship of two gay lovers in the mid-90s.
