New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art (NJ MoCA) is dedicated to identifying, fostering and presenting the most significant and challenging artistic expression of our time, with a focus on emerging artists from around the world.

Central to NJ MoCA’s mission is inspiring, enriching and making a difference in people’s lives through contemporary culture.

NJ MoCA is a 501c3 organization in formation that aspires to distinguish itself as a leading international cultural institution bringing thought-provoking exhibitions, installations, performances, publications, education and outreach to a broad and diverse audience. The museum will provide enjoyable cultural experiences to make contemporary art understandable, relevant and approachable, and to create a welcoming and engaging sense of community.

As New Jersey’s only museum dedicated to contemporary art with a global constitution and scope, NJ MoCA is poised to have significant cultural, educational, economic and social impact.

With a bold vision embraced by the contemporary art world as represented at Art Basel, Frieze and The Armory Show, NJ MoCA will endeavor to attract, engage and inspire a worldwide audience and transform New Jersey into a vibrant international cultural destination.

In harmony with its mission to champion creative innovation, NJ MoCA will introduce a new and unconventional business model to the arts. While museums are traditionally rooted at a single site, NJ MoCA will seek a modest size permanent hub to present exhibitions in conjunction with programming at alternative nomadic locations throughout the State.

As a Kunsthalle — a non-collecting institution presenting temporary art exhibitions — NJ MoCA can be fluid and dynamically responsive, on the forefront in the exploration of emerging ideas in artistic production from a range of perspectives in contemporary culture.

Combining economic efficiencies of these two components will afford a smarter business model that will allow the institution to devote more resources to inspire public interaction and social impact rather than to operating a large building, or acquiring and maintaining a permanent collection.

NJ MoCA will reach a broad and diverse audience of all ages to shape the contemporary arts into an exciting, understandable and memorable experience through innovative programming and immersive opportunities that will put the contemporary arts into the context of our times and create a sense of community.

Compelling outreach programs – where the contemporary arts and community initiatives intersect – will inspire dialogue, promote civic engagement, and captivate audiences in new ways.

Stimulating, relevant and fun educational programs will provoke critical thinking and problem solving through the study, application and appreciation of contemporary art. A high-energy, progressive approach to arts education will present students with opportunities and resources that are not available in regular school curricula.

Philanthropic partnerships will benefit and enhance the lives of the underprivileged and arts-related nonprofit organizations that serve those with special needs.
