The National Academy School offers artistic instruction for artists of every level. With an impressive variety of classes and programs, students may choose by artistic discipline, instructor, schedule and level of commitment. National Academy students have the unique opportunity to work in a small class environment with northern-light studios under the direction of the working artists that make up our celebrated faculty. In addition to classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media and more, the Academy offers a variety of workshops, lectures and critiques as well as visits to NYC studios and museums. The Academy has something for everyone and students are encouraged to develop and explore their personal creative journey in accordance with their own artistic goals.

The Academy offers a variety of classes designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Choose from an array of figure, still-life, landscape and abstract drawing and painting classes as well as classes specializing in watercolor and pastel. Sculpture, printmaking and mixed media are also offered and we have a selection of classes designed exclusively for young artists (children ages 6-16). For the more serious student, uninstructed classes are available and the Diploma Program offers the opportunity for personalized mentoring, individual critiques and a more intensive, one-on-one experience.

The Academy school offers a supportive and vibrant learning environment through small class sizes, personal attention from faculty and a unique blend of dedicated students. There are no portfolio requirements for entry and students are encouraged to work at their own pace and pursue their own artistic path. Twice a year students have the opportunity to show their work and win awards in both juried and non-juried shows, and individual classes exhibit their work on a continued basis throughout the year.

Throughout the year the Academy hosts many innovative and provocative workshops and lectures. These range from hour-long lunchtime lectures to one and two-day intensives to week-long and evening workshops that cover a variety of subjects and artistic techniques. “Introduction to Encaustic” and “Power Painting: Using the Palette Knife, Photograph and Self-Portrait” explore different ways of working with and applying paint. “Light and Shade on Toned Paper” and “Books As Art” call upon students to consider the role of paper in their work. And “Looking at Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art” and “Theory and Practice in Art” are just a few of the workshops that expose students to different ways of thinking and looking at art.
