Silvia Russel Borough(ed) Stories - Book Launch and Panel Discussion at Participant Inc
Wednesday June 24 2009 from 8 to 10 pm

LMAKprojects is pleased to announce the book launch Borough(ed) Stories by artist Silvia Russel, hosted by Participant Inc. In her book Russel explores the social structure of neighborhoods (i.e. gentrification) through drawings that were inspired by the communities and habitants of neighborhoods in New York (Bed-Stuy), Berlin (Steglitz), Eindhoven (Strijp-S) and Amsterdam (North).

During the past 5 years Russel, immersed herself into these neighborhoods, and while living there would attend and organize creative workshops at community centers. By inviting the habitants to share their stories, she found an inspiring starting point for her own drawings. The result is a book that relays not just Russel's experience but also drawings of the community providing a very intriguing juxtaposition of the viewer (Russel) and the participants from the neighborhoods.

Along with the launch there will be a panel discussion that will explore and discuss Russel's impressions and the social structure of a neighborhood (ie gentrification) and the impact of art.    The participants are; Sylvia Russel, Mitchel Marco who wrote the text for the publication, Ph. D David Halle Professor of Sociology at UCLA, and Crystel Bobb-Semple owner of Brownstone Books in Bed-Sty.  The variety of participants will offer a rounded and opinionated look at current society and the developments within.

Participant Inc. is located at 253 East Houston Street New York NY 10002, 212 254 4334
