Opening Reception with the Artist Alexandra Hedison

Frank Pictures Gallery is pleased to present Los Angeles - based artist and photographer Alexandra Hedison in a new series of photographs, Ithaka.

In Ithaka, her fourth solo exhibition of photographs, Hedison uses the temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest as a metaphor for the odyssey of life. Through a series of large format photographs, Hedison offers viewers a journey into the intricate and layered tapestry that forms the fabric we inhabit. Inspired by C.P. Cavafy’s poem, Ithaka is Hedison's latest body of work, which was shot in the temperate rainforest in North America. This series of large-format photogrpahs first previewed for the press launch of Concrete + Glass (the art event which brought together over 25 artists to the galleries and art spaces in London's East End) in July 2008. The same year, Hedison exhibited Ithaka at Shoreditch Town Hall in London and Gallery 28 in New York as part of the New Yorker' Magazine’s 2008 Passport to the Arts. All of these exhibitions were sponsored by Barclays Capital. “I see the forest as the physical embodiment of the unconscious space within. This work is not about trees. These images are not about the forest but about the process of discovery,” says Hedison. A Los Angeles-based artist and photographer, she first showed her abstract landscape work at Rose Gallery in Bergamot Station. In 2003, Hedison's solo exhibition Elements, an overview of her work from the previous 4 years, was exhibited at White Room Gallery in West Hollywood. In 2005 the gallery also exhibited her (Re)building series, which addressed the changing themes of loss, transition, and recovery. She will be participating in an international group exhibition that will tour the Middle East in 2010. Concurrent with her photography career, Hedison also directs film and is an actress. She has appeared since 2006 as the character, Dylan, on Showtime’s The L Word.
