Naked City: Simion Cernica, Kio Griffith, Luis Alonso Sánchez

It is with great pleasure that we present the three-person exhibition Naked City featuring painting and found-object sculpture by Simion Cernica (Romania/USA), Kio Griffith (Japan/USA) and Luis Alonso Sánchez (Mexico) at JAUS. The exhibition name refers to a music album released in 1990 and eponymous ensemble led by avant garde composer and saxophonist John Zorn that collided musical genres including, but not limited to jazz of all stripes, surf, country-western, grindcore, atonal and experimental music, movie scores, noise, punk rock and thrash metal. This exhibition and combination of artists was conceived to embody the improvisatory spirit of free jazz, the challenging nature of experimental music, and the confrontational energy of punk rock from a multi-generational perspective. John Zorn’s groundbreaking album seemed the ideal metaphor to embody the collective persona of the works on display.
Cernica will present new paintings that experiment with abstraction within the context of a wider visual language filtered through what the artist considers “our distorted reality and times.” His main interests lie in ideas that revolve around “punk energy, poetic economy, and protest aesthetics” as they relate to his thoughts about materiality.
Griffiths current body of work is a process of shuffling information to find meaning. He argues, “In a world of self-journalism in which documentation is a daily activity of sharing texts and images, the general idea of ‘reading’ has changed.” He considers his work an interrogation of reinvented and new languages, and truncated communication techniques where relative associations and reading between lines, faces, spaces and the air surrounding us have become increasingly vital.
Born and raised in Tijuana, Luis Alonso Sánchez will present a body of work based on juxtaposition and appropriation as a means of questioning cultural conventionalism. He confronts what he refers to as “the sociopolitical decay” of the border city by deconstructing, reconfiguring and recombining different materials as a means to reflect the constant change in the identity of a society that finds itself in a continual process of destruction and reconstruction. His efforts culminate in an “accidental abstraction” whose visual language derives from a playful call and response with the catastrophic.
From Bucharest, Romania and currently living and working in Los Angeles, Simion Cernica deliberately avoided the conservative and stagnant reality of art school in Romania during the chaotic transition from communism to capitalism in the 90s. As a result, he created his own personal method of studying contemporary art.
Initially he focused on photography, painting, video/film, installation and later extended toward whatever medium and discourse necessary to express his conceptual position and formal exploration. Recently, after many years, he has returned to the ‘painting’ medium as his main studio practice.

Kio Griffith is a Los Angeles and Japan based visual and sound artist, independent curator, writer, and producer. His conceptual based work includes drawing, painting, sound, video, performance, electronics, language, sculpture and installation. He has exhibited internationally the UK, Japan, Germany, Croatia, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Turkey, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and the U.S. His current projects include founder / project director at TYPE (Tokyo+Yokohama Projects Exchange), co-founder of Transit Republic, IMMI, and Genzou, independent curator, contributing editor at Fabrik, Artscape and Art Bridge magazines, former art director at Angel City Jazz Festival and has designed over 300 music album packaging. Griffith was recently invited to exhibit in the 2016 Aichi Triennial, has been selected for the 2017 Emerging Curators program at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions.) and currently on research for a public project for a remote island in the Inland Sea (Setonaikai).
Luis Alonso Sánchez
Born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Luis Alonso Sánchez is currently finishing his bachelor’s degree in Plastic Arts at the UABC Art Department. While studying, he worked at TJINCHINA Project Space, Tijuana as an assistant while also working as artist Daniel Ruanova’s personal assistant on both national and international projects. Sánchez has exhibited his own work in México, USA, Japan and The Netherlands in spaces such as Deslave in Tijuana, Mexicali Rose in Mexicali, the 1st Joshua Treenial at BOXO Projects in Joshua Tree, CA, and San Diego Art Institute in San Diego, CA.
