Contstructions and Hidden Monsters
In an extensive examination of the city, Nermine el Ansari's sound installation "Constructions II" is an unnerving and surreal sensory experience that features the graphic collision of two city scapes. The show also brings together a selection of the artist's drawings and black and white photography that revolve around the same theme, as well as other ideas that complete a complex narrative tapestry in the exhibition. By re inventing the semiotics of art practice, through El Ansari`s constant questioning of form (which in itself builds its own content that eventually both mirrors and repels the basic subject matter).
From notebook drawings of delicate and orderly rows of houses to massive apartment blocks and the unsettling slum districts of Cairo, the works featured are as meticulous as they are chaotic, and the subject matter as simple as it is psychotic. Rather than a static architectural form devoid of context the city and its buildings are treated as bodies that live, breathe and move.
