DESCRIPTION

The Meltdown video series by Nitin Mukul are timely inspections of landscapes altered by human hands but ultimately controlled by forces larger than willful manipulation. In this time of ecological and economic turmoil, the degradation process can be seen as a stripping away of the human installations and effects imposed on the planet and on the collective consciousness.Beginning at what would customarily be the end for a traditional painting process, Mukul brings the viewer backwards through the regression of his chosen medium, ice, to a state not yet defined in form, water. Here we are liberated from preconceptions about achievement and the finality of construction, instead encouraged to consider not only the transience of creative work, but the presence of destructive forces and the products they themselves create. - Rupa Shah
