DESCRIPTION

Anyone who is familiar with Jaap van den Ende's (1944, Delft, the Netherlands) earlier, formal, often abstract geometric work, can see a radical U-turn in his current practice based on flowers, landscapes and human figures. Jaap van den Ende started working on these emotionally charged paintings, in which figuration plays an important part, in the late 80's. All the same, his present-day procedure is still in line with his so-called ‘cool’ work during the 60's and 70's. Oppositions like reason and emotion, or system and intuition in his style of work, have been present for a long time. The last few years he has developed a variety of formal idioms for these premises.

Van den Ende studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in The Hague. His rich oeuvre is to be found in various collections, including the Van Abbenmuseum, Eindhoven, Städtisches Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach; Museum Bochum, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden, CODA Museum, Apeldoorn, Rijksdienst Verspreide Kunstvoorwerpen, Den Haag, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Het Prinsenhof, Delft, and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. He recently exhibited with Ger Dekkers, Jan Dibbets, and Ger van Elk in the show Broken Landscapes at Situation Kust in Bochum (2014). Other exhibitions were held at Musee des Beaux-Arts, Tourcoing, FR (2001) Städtische Galerie, Nordhorn (1984), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (1982), Galerijs Sucremene Umjetnosti, Zagreb, SB (1980), and repeatedly at Het Prinsenhof, Delft,  Stedelijk Museum Schiedam,De Lakenhal, Leiden, and Haags Gemeente Museum, The Hague. Van den Ende has written various books about his vision on art and his personal practice. He lives and works in Amsterdam.
