DESCRIPTION

This performance/exhibition action reimagines the work of Korean video art pioneer and Fluxus key figure Nam June Paik through interpretations of his work by Bay Area artists Kota Ezawa (Minji Sohn, Anne McGuire, Cliff Hengst and Arash Fayez still awaiting confirmation). Ezawa will recreate two of Paik’s video sculptures, and Sohn, McGuire, Hengst and Fayez will produce “cover versions” of Paik’s performance work. Ezawa was a student in Paik’s video class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the mid-90s and was invited as a speaker at Paik’s 85th anniversary party at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2012.

Directly or indirectly, the work of each of the artists participating in this event connects to the oeuvre of Paik, through myriad associations such as national origin, materiality or level of subversiveness.
