Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce the first full-length exhibition of their 2016 season, “Paintings by Ruben Aguirre + Victor Lopez.” The show features abstract works by Chicago artists Aguirre and Lopez. The gallery will host an opening reception Friday, March 25 from 6 - 9 pm, at which both artists will be in attendance.

Drawing from their common roots in graffiti and hand stylings, the works of both Aguirre and Lopez consist of abstractions that explore varying techniques in layering, tonality and the common ground in “language” between the raw, urgency of urban street writing and the fluidity and intention behind their current, refined painting styles.

Ruben Aguirre’s current work consists of flat compositions with continued use of organic forms, playing with negative and positive space through the use color and texture. While not depicting specific letter characters, the accumulation of segments come together in the same way that the arrangement of words do. As a believer that words cannot always articulate the range of emotion and feeling that we encounter as humans, Aguirre sees his fragmented pieces capturing these raw, in between moments in it's own dissected typographical language.

In Victor Lopez’ current series of paintings he uses abstraction as a visual language to represent himself in time and space. One painting picks up where the other left off in an ongoing investigation concerned more with color and process than with portraying a specific image. Lopez’ works develop by using intuitive marks as the starting point then applying several layers of color and drawing. He is constantly interested in the relationship between the intuitive and the structural elements in the paintings and the surreal possibilities they present.

The exhibition will run March 25 - May 15, 2016.
