DESCRIPTION

Ahmed Nage makes shoes, like his father and his grandfather before him. When Ahmed applied for a graphic design position at Townhouse, the gallery staff immediately recognized him as “that guy with the shoes.” And then we invited him to have an exhibition.

In the past year, Townhouse has been exploring the often fine line between art and design in its exhibition program. Shoes are one of the most obviously functional of objects, but in a commercial space — like a storefront — they are often shown in highly aesthetic ways, as if they were useless artifacts. In the visually oversaturated landscape of hyper-capitalism, everything has become aestheticized to an unprecedented degree, and design and commerce often borrow from the vocabulary of fine art to increase their aesthetic quotient. A downtown Cairo storefront might look like a wildly kitschy baroque collage, a curiously assembled cabinet of curiosities; a high-end designer boutique often looks like a minimalist installation, with Donald Judd-like plinths and Dan Flavin-esque neons.

But in this exhibition, the viewer is left with the perhaps unsatisfying experience of encountering these things without the trusty conceptual framework that helps to distinguish whether a thing is art or design (or good or bad, or interesting or boring, or successful or failed). In the context of this unstable, fractured framework, the viewer has little choice but to confront the thing itself.

So in the end, this is not really an exhibition about art or design, or economic machinations, or sociopolitical arguments. This is an exhibition about shoes.
