Tobey Fine Arts is proud to present Lorraine Williams' Next Place, an installation of large-scale, abstract paintings representing the artist's continued exploration of painting as visual language.
She states: "As an artist I am committed to the advancement of abstract painting and my work addresses philosophical concerns. Painting is in itself a discovery and also an expression of that discovery. It is my aim to contribute to the language of art in a way that expresses and encompasses an ever-growing number of diverse metaphors while distilling them into more universal truths. Every work of art produces its own unique sensation, and will evoke a unique response in the viewer, yet at the same time I hope to elicit a reaction that is more common to all on an unconscious level, collectively, before the individual (conscious) reaction is triggered. I am not solely grappling with an unconscious dream-state, but rather trying to depict the nature of the psyche itself, which would combine both intuition and intellect. I believe the way to do this is to create abstract imagery that is not readily recognizable, at least in terms of our three-dimensional visual world, instead attempting to create a new symbolic language that expresses non-representational thought, rather than allude to or abstract nature. Any organic quality implied is hopefully being put into the service of conveying thought or feeling, and any "realism" perceived should be considered a metaphysical reality. My goal then is more a deconstruction of the emotional and mental spaces that underlie these images."
Williams' rich, color-saturated works are created using many glazes of transparent color. That these paintings are abstract and do not employ any recognizable imagery, while the states of consciousness they allude to are familiar to all of us, is significant. The paintings themselves are fluid, in flux like the human psyche they seek to depict, and their titles evoke equally abstract yet familiar sensations. Human life is a complex business of yearning, dreaming and remembering conflicting with feelings of fear, apathy, aggression and despair--and these works are appropriately moody and atmospheric.
