DESCRIPTION

Schneider Gallery is pleased to present recent works by Sherry Karver and Patty Carroll. With two distinctly different artistic practices, both Karver and Carroll engage with identity through the manipulation of color, form, texture, and pattern. Identity acts as a jumping off point, but layers of complexity (introduced by the artists) expand upon and enhance the reading of the works.

In Carroll’s work, individual identity is masked by immense amounts of fabric. Singular figures are draped with patterns that also cover the walls and floor; they are completely enveloped by their environment. “The domestic interior of the home is a place of comfort but can also be camouflage for individual identity when decor becomes an obsession, idealization, or indication of position or status.” Carroll reflects upon the domestic space as a site for empowerment or concealment. This will be the first exhibition of the artist’s video work in tandem with her photographs.
