This TWINART exibition contains a series of photographs titled INSTANT REPLAY. They are all one of a kind framed Polaroid 20”X24” vintage prints made between 1987 – 1989. They are non-digital prints. From the series TWINART fabricated lightbox editions between 1993 and 2007.
In the mid 80’s TWINART were sponsored by the Polaroid Corporation to produce large format photographs at the 20 X 24 Studio in NY. Their concept was to create optimistic images exploring the dream of an ideal life. Consumerism in the 1980’s is reflected in the multi-layered dense imagery. Iconic images of nurses, surfers, the perfect lips, models selling shampoo and other brand name products add to the pop esthetic of their INSTANT REPLAY series of photographs. The highly saturated color palette, of these pictures, is reminiscent of Technicolor film of the 60’s. Devo’s song It’s a Beautiful World is the music one could imagine being played as a soundtrack for the work.
To create this body of work TWINART recycled a collection of video clips, captured as freeze frames to double expose with collaged print ads. Glossy ads are juxtaposed with pixilated video images as a remix. The viewer experience is similar to watching several tv channels at once or using a remote to flip through the channels.
