DESCRIPTION
SITE Santa Fe is proud to present Alan Shields’s Maze (1981-82) in conjunction with video documentation of Stephen Petronio Dance Company’s Into the Maze (2012). Mazeis a large-scale immersive interactive environment, a labyrinth of narrow pathways created by a series of two-sided works on un-stretched canvas hung on a frame of painted poles. Shields (1944-2005) was known for creating abstract works that blurred the boundaries between painting, sculpture, printmaking and installation. Maze is the largest work Shields ever produced.

Into The Maze is an action event created by choreographer Stephen Petronio in 2012, in conjunction with eight of his dancers, for Alan Shields’ work Maze. Conceived as a duet between the dancers and Shields’ monumental environmental installation, this event takes place in and around this architectural puzzle-in-form. Thirty years after its initial creation, Shields’s Maze is re-animated and a new disciplinary boundary is pushed by the insertion of dance. The dance is set to music composed by Tom Laurie, specifically for the work, and the dancers are costumed in pieces from Shields’ Wearables series.
