DESCRIPTION

In Assembling Vestiges and Assembling the Lunar, BOLT Resident Joseph G. Cruz compounds and abates “geohistorical locativity” by investigating representations of nineteenth-century polar expeditions, satellite imagery, and lunar exploration. The exhibition features new works including a sound installation that translates recent topographic mapping of the far side of the moon, a microscopic illustration of the night sky of the first moon walk in 1969, scientific artifacts such as lunar meteorites and volcanic crystals only found in Antarctica, insulating ‘space’ blankets, a commissioned reproduction of William Turner’s painting Sunset From the Top of Rigi, and a video work incorporating the appropriated footage of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘nod to polar exploration’ where he endlessly eats his own boot.

Cruz’s affinity for the discovery of historical, cultural, and scientific context become evident in his use of curatorial strategies, often resulting in poetic and humorous narrative.
