DESCRIPTION

Stand So Close To Me broadly looks at the subject of intimacy in this exhibition featuring new works by HATCH Projects artists Kasia Houlihan, Ryan Peter Miller, and Rebecca Parker.  The exhibition will open and continue at the Chicago Artists Coalition from September 6 – 16, then move to a special installation in BOOTH #428 at EXPO CHICAGO from September 19-22 at Navy Pier.

Curated by Teresa Silva, the exhibition is predicated on the idea that intimacy is part of the human psyche and usually expressed through simple means and gestures with conciseness and potency. Often times, it is an aspiration for an inwardness, but also a corresponding publicness. As such, intimacy occupies both a space for closeness and a distance for reflection. It is a kind of attachment that desires an affective relation to something, which can be viscerally felt but can also be destabilizing, making one come undone.

The artists in this exhibition explore the primal desire for closeness and the underlining tensions that exist through the mediums of paint, large-scale installation, video, and multiple uses of text and language and through the lenses of interpersonal relationships, space, and material. Stand so Close to Me presents works that reveal the tension of intimacy that arises when distinctions between the public and private collapse.

This exhibition is organized by HATCH Project curator-in-resident, Teresa Silva.
