Beginning July 30, the Bowery Gallery on 25th Street in Chelsea presents its annual national juried exhibition. Now in its 22nd year, the exhibition has been curated in previous years by painters including William Bailey, Rackstraw Downes, Janet Fish, and Lois Dodd, and by the art critics Jed Perl and Lance Esplund.

This year’s juror, Joan Snyder, is an internationally recognized painter whose work is in many public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Jewish Museum, The Guggenheim, and the Phillips Collection. In 2005, The Jewish Museum presented a 35-year survey of her work which then traveled to the Danforth Museum in Framingham, Massachusetts. Ms. Snyder has been the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. In 2007, she received a MacArthur Fellowship. She currently lives in Brooklyn and Woodstock, NY.

From hundreds of applicants this year, Ms. Snyder has chosen 31 artists who are represented by thirty-nine works in the exhibition. Gallerygoers will find artists whose work they know, as well as artists new to the New York scene. The mediums represented include watercolor, ink, collage, gouache, oil, and mixed media. The group of works reflects the eclectic mix of painters and sculptors for which the Bowery Gallery is known. Bowery Gallery exhibitions have been praised this year on and in CityArts, among other publications.
