Oriental Contemporary Fashion Show
Join us at Townhouse on June 23 for our last event of the season, the Oriental Contemporary Fashion Show. Forty aspiring designers will present original creations produced during an intensive 3-month workshop led by Emad Hamdy and Walid Farouk.
The workshop participants—an international group hailing from Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Libya and Syria—reinvented the fashion icons of their cultural heritage with a contemporary twist. The garments will be worn by aspiring models from Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia who, through the workshop, had the opportunity to participate in a special catwalk training session led by internationally renowned model Tara Emad.
Before the catwalk portion of the evening begins, SAWA is also very pleased to present special performances by Nesma Haddad and the Sudanese singer Asia Madni.
This program, made possible by the generous support of Tadamon, was designed to give a space for creation to anyone with a passion for design, and equip participants with concrete skills to help them pursue employment in different areas of the fashion and clothing industry. The workshop leaders and special guest lecturers taught modules on conceptual approaches to fashion, tailoring, patternmaking and fitting, fashion photography, and jewelry and accessories. The Contemporary Oriental workshop is just one of many free workshops that the SAWA program offers throughout the year to Cairo’s refugee communities.
This exciting event was entirely volunteer-run and was only made possible with the support of our enthusiastic participants, volunteers, and all the generous supporters of the SAWA program. A special thank you to Yasmin Saed, Rania Farouk and Eman Hakim.
