"LAdies" A CalArts Alumni Group Show
The diversity of the work that has been selected for this exhibit reflects perfectly the duplicitous nature of the title itself. Curators, Samir Evol and Jimmy Thompson of the CalArts Alumni Art Collective “ The Stuff”, leave the interpretation of the title LAdies ambiguous to both the artists and the viewers, encouraging the artists, and fellow founding members of “The Stuff”, to explore their own ideas about The City, The Ladies and the impermanence of both. The viewer is challenged to interpret.
LAdies features work by: Samir “Evol” Argandiwall, Jeremy Bernstein, Dave Creek, Jon Gomez, Nick Jeong, Morgan Kelly, Jimmy Thompson and Chris Wood. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 22nd from 7-11 pm with the artists in attendance.
About “The Stuff”:
“The Stuff” is comprised of a growing group of CalArts Alumni, who are committed to promote and champion each others work and creative endeavors. “The Stuff” is named in homage to the late great CalArts teacher Michael E. Mitchell, who could often be heard motivating his students by saying. “That’s the stuff!”. Mitchell always encouraged greatness, pushed creative boundaries and was a master at recognizing and nurturing natural talent. The collective will continue to strive for “The Stuff”.
About the Curators:
Samir Evol, Jimmy Thompson and all of the founding members of “The Stuff”, met while attending CalArts nearly 10 years ago. Samir and Jimmy both graduated from the CalArts Character Animation department and immediately went to work in the entertainment industry. Sam in character design and story board art and Jimmy in video production and new media creation. As time passed they began to realize how much their time at CalArts had enriched their lives, informed their professional pursuits and helped to forge their most lasting friendships. “The Stuff” grew gradually and naturally from the bonds and shared experiences found at CalArts. When not curating shows, Sam works as the art director for a clothing line and his unique and highly regarded style of graffiti can be seen throughout Southern California and beyond. Jimmy is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Brainbow, where he gets to apply his prowess for bridging art and commerce through illustration, design, animation and video production.
