Many of movements that emerged in the late 1960s are represented in the portfolio collection Artists and Photographs.
Essentially a boxed exhibition, the portfolio was compiled and published in 1970 by Marian Goodman’s Multiples Inc.
The assembled artist’s books featuring photographs and prints, were created by 19 prominent artists of the time,
the majority are now recognized as some of the most important artists of the latter part of the twentieth century
and as leaders of Conceptual Art, Land Art, or Pop Art.
At the close of the 1960s, art was re-evaluating and re defining it’s self. It began to go beyond the object and incorporate language and ideas.
This line of inquiry carried over into photography, which in turn influenced traditional methods of art production.
Many artists utilised mechanical productions of multiples in order to circulate their work more directly to their public, particularly to a larger,
younger, hipper generation of collectors.
Marian Goodman, recognising artists’ interest in this experimentation, published Artists and Photographs in an edition of 1,200, though only 200 complete with the Dan Graham designed box and the Rauschenberg and Tom Gormley works.
