DESCRIPTION

Nautical life is revealed in more than 80 remarkable paintings and works on paper by artists such as Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Maurice Denis, and Paul Signac—Impressionists and Post-Impressionists whose breathtaking artistry reflected a deep understanding of pleasure boating and competition. Their brushwork suggests both the atmospheric effects and the sensations of movement that contribute to these enterprises on the water. Loans from prestigious international collections are joined by paintings and works on paper from the Fine Arts Museums' own holdings.
