Martin van Zomeren is pleased to present ‘interior A-J’, the second solo exhibition of Katja Mater at the gallery.
The gallery space is disrupted by a very large site specific in tervention that follows the peculiar shape of the gallery. There are only 70 cm left in-between the installation and the walls of the gallery, making it impossible to have a complete view of the exhibition at once. Only step by step - walking around the invasive intervention - it is possible to discover the works. They are the witness of the process, docume nting the painting of the installation from blue to silver, as now only silver brush st rokes remain visible.
The title ‘interior A-J’ refers to the 10 points of view that Katja Mater used in order to document the site-specific intervention. For each point of view there is a hole in the installation and a camera looking through it. The different vie ws meet and cross inside the installation.
Several exposures were shot on each negative in four different moments during the making of the painting. In this way she physically built an ima ge on the negative. Chro matic transitions, chronological evolutions, perspective and sc ale shifts are all essential ingredients of her work.
Katja Mater’s research focuses on the medium of photography itself. She aims to make its more intangible elements visible. In ‘interior A - J’ the t ension between showing and hiding is also stressed by the physical impossibility to see th e works displayed on the wall and their origin – the interior of the installation - at t he same time.
Katja Mater graduated from the Free Media department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2 003 and subsequently attended ‘The Ateliers,’ from 2 003 - 2 005.
Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe and the U S including shows at La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2 012), De Vleeshal, Middelburg (2 012), Temporary Gallery, Koln (2012), Centre d’Art Contemporain, Genève (2 011), Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (2 011), Nest, Den Hague (2 011), FOAM – Photography Museum in Amsterdam (2 011, 2 009, 2008), the Dutch Photography Museum in Rotterdam (20 09), ‘Principle Matter’ at V&A gallery, New York and Higher Pictures, N ew York (2 008), Stedelijk Museum Bureau in Am- sterdam (2 007), the Gagosian Gallery in conjunction with the 4 th Berlin Biennial (2006). A new publication will be released in 2 013.
