LOS ANGELES, CA (February 15th, 2013) - LA Artcore is pleased to present a survey of the work of Los Angeles artist Jon Peterson ranging from 1976-present.
Peterson's art continues to be marked by divergent bodies of work spanning across painting, sculpture and site-specific installation. Peterson's background as an aerospace engineer at Lockheed Martin and his subsequent exposure to art and artists in the early to mid-1970's at the time of his enrollment at Otis Art Institute, significantly impacted his creative development. There, Peterson developed significantly under the wings of Miles Forst as well as Mike Kanemitsu and Charlie White connecting in his art, the particular, abstracted and structural interplays of L.A.'s urban environment. He investigated concepts through combinations of materials as well as technological approaches amassing various works dealing with the scale of the human body executed behind practical methodology and intuitive experimentation.
Peterson's eventual relocation and championing of the then cultural fomenting of Downtown Los Angeles' in the 1970's and 1980's led him further into the questioning of his own art. Amidst this barren, desolate and thriving landscape drawing artists, musicians, designers and poets from all over city, Peterson furthered his involvement within this environment by developing site-specific and semi-architectural sculptures that adhered to various edifices throughout Downtown. The sculptures which immediately became interpreted and taken up as shelters, shed light on an intersection where art and life blur. Meanwhile, Peterson was also developing abstracted, large-scale drawings and architectonic sculptures revealing a striking consistency in his process that begins with an idea, carried out by laying out simple and straightforward parameters to devise something - whether a painting or sculpture - that is an exploration of a logical and mechanized human condition.
