Gigi Mills: As I Remember
Gigi Mill’s work focuses on simplified forms, figures and shapes that are reduced to their simplest outlines, planes and colors, so that the viewer is caught by the emotional power present. Gigi observes, “A successful piece should have the psychological and aesthetic weight to hold the viewer, to entice them to keep coming back to it. It’s my goal with each painting to create extraordinary beauty with the ballast of emotional complexity.”
Working in series allows Gigi to tell a larger story amongst a group of related paintings. Elements from a previous series, such as Gigi’s museum interiors, reclining figures, Southern women, and still-lives, often reemerge. From complex collages to oil paintings on panel, Gigi’s various series have begun to mingle. Her recent trip to France inspired the “Café Series”. With very little detail, these elegant paintings capture everyday events with a profound effect that is both personal and timeless. Whether she is working on a figure, a landscape, an abstract piece, it attracts the viewer with an interest that lies beyond its surface.
