The San Francisco Foundation & SOMArts' Annual Murphy & Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards Exhibition
Derailed, 2012, by artist Keegan Luttrell
SOMArts Cultural Center and The San Francisco Foundation present a focused look at the future of the Bay Area visual and media arts landscape, September 4–October 2, 2012. The Annual Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards Exhibition showcases the work of promising visual artists from regional Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) programs working across disciplines and identifies young artists whose work connects directly to the pulse of emerging trends.
Opening on Friday, September 7, 6:30–9pm with a reception and awards ceremony, the exhibition surveys new work from the recipients of the competitive Jack and Gertrude Murphy and Edwin Anthony and Adelaine Bourdeaux Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards, funded by The San Francisco Foundation and administered by SOMArts. The Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards provide annual tuition awards of $4,000 to MFA students in digital art, film/video, hybrid practice, installation, mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture to support their artistic exploration and development.
Fellowship recipients were selected by Adrian Arias, mixed-media artist and Multimedia Coordinator at the Mission Cultural Center for the Latino Arts; Mildred Howard, sculptor and installation artist; and Justin Hoover, Curator & Gallery Director at SOMArts Cultural Center. After careful evaluation of the 121 portfolios submitted, the panel recommended the following outstanding MFA visual art students to receive awards.
Additional free public events include Bay Area Trajectories, artists & curators discuss historic trends in the arts, Wednesday, September 12, 7-9pm, and Makers, Mimosas & Matinees, an afternoon of artist-led creative workshops & film screenings, Wednesday, September 22, 12–3pm.
