Made in Chicago
June 13 - September 2, 2008
The Chicago Group Show presented by the Schneider Gallery captures the great variety of photographers Chicago is home to.
Chicago is fertile ground for artists of all kinds; photographers being some of the most exceptional. Surely the variety of extremes- the buttery mid-western light of day and rich shadows of night; the tight corners and monumental architecture of the city that give way to an expansive landscape has an influence on all of us but is of particular inspiration for the photographer.
The Schneider Gallery is proud to present the work of Robert Babbin, Les Boschke, Adam Holtzman, Sarah McKemie, and Terttu Uibopuu, and Seung Jae Kim, Six Chicagoland artists. Babbin and Boschke enhance and shift realities. Babbin pushes the colors of the natural world to high intensity, and Boschke transforms every day architecture into the fantastic. Holtzman, McKemie and Uibopuu, focus on the figure, and turn the camera on themselves. Holtzman directly confronts self-portraiture and has developed a unique photo-processing technique which uses coffee as a developer. McKemie and Uibopuu collaborate on dual self-portraits; the resulting images reveal a tension between anxiety and awareness, and Seung Jae Kim questions existence and presence by altering our perception of reality.
Because these artists differ in age, approach, and philosophy the Schneider Gallery is able to bring together a real and concrete cross section of artists and work, effectively highlighting not only these talented artists, but the range of themes and working styles they explore.
