Going and Coming
Frank Pictures is proud to present "Going and Coming" David Florimbi’s seventh one-man show with the gallery. Following on the heels of his sold out exhibition, “The Sky’s The Limit!”, Florimbi’s newest exhibition is comprised of landscape paintings that are clearly more than just landscapes. “There’s a feeling when looking at them,” writes Charles Donelan in his essay for the book that accompanies the exhibition, “that they might lift you off your feet and suck you bodily into the space they imply. This is landscape as visual vortex, and at times it seems as though the uncertain “soaring or sinking” feeling they provoke is the real subject of these images. Like the tumbling winged putti in Titian’s mighty “Europa and the Bull” in the Gardner Museum, the viewer is in free fall.” There is life to these paintings well beyond the ‘natural life’ they depict; things are off kilter; the clouds, land, and even the sky itself loom and swerve on some unseen but almost palpable axis. And yet, despite all this motion and the vertiginous disorientation it engenders, there’s a profoundly deep stillness to them as well, almost as if we, the viewer, were the very axis upon which they spin. It is this interplay between axis and movement, light and dark, sky (nothingness) and land (somethingness) that perhaps lifts them, and maybe even us, if just for a moment, straight off the ground.
Florimbi’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1983 in Italy (Palazzo di Cortona and the American Academy of Rome), New York (K&E, Radix, and the Ronald Feldman Gallery) and numerous shows throughout California. His work has also been included in museum shows, most recently at the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara, CA, the University Art Museum at UCSB, and the Georgetown University Gallery in Washington, D.C. His work is also in many collections, including Cedars Sinai Medical Center, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, and the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Florimbi was born in Pennsylvania and received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Georgetown University. He was awarded a scholarship to study graduate level painting in Cortona, Italy through the University of Georgia. He was also awarded the Milton Glaser Design Fellowship by the Milton Glaser Foundation in 1982. Florimbi currently resides in Santa Barbara, California.
