DESCRIPTION

Journey to the West is a sixteenth-century Chinese epic, attributed to Wu Cheng'en, that was based on the life of a historical monk named Xuanzang. It recounts the poignant and humorous adventures of the impetuous Monkey King and the pure-hearted Tang priest as they struggle with demons and ogres-and each another-during their journey from China to India to bring back the Buddhist scriptures. With unexpected movement and song, Diane Wolkstein breaks open the text, encouraging the audience to question the path of goodness (Tang priest) versus the path of power (Monkey King) and how they might be integrated then, and now.
