AKINCI takes pleasure in inviting you to the opening of Ronald Versloot's new solo exhibition Float on May 5, 5 - 7 pm.

In his works Versloot investigates the figure-ground problem: the relationship between the figure and the background and how to drive the division of the two into its extreme . While Versloot combined linocuts with acrylic paint in his previous works, in his new works Versloot uses spray paint to enhance the solitude of the figures, which never seem to fit into their surroundings. More than this, they seem to either float in the foreground or disappear into the background, hereby recalling pictures of ghostly apparitions. As only their silhouettes are shown, they lack all form of individuality. This is a trait they seem to share with their surroundings. Instead of painting specific places, Versloot is more focused on the memory or feeling of a place. The story of the paintings never become clear – purposefully perhaps. Versloot likes to seduce the viewer to enter a world of narratives which seem to float in this void.

Ronald Versloot (1964, Apeldoorn, NL) studied at the Koninklijke Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch and at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He has had shows at .a.o: GAD Galleri, Oslo, Freies Museum, Berlin , Galleri S.E. , Bergen, Norway, Galerie Andreas  Brüning, Düsseldorf, Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and several times at AKINCI and galerie Maurits van de Laar, The Hague.
