DESCRIPTION
Kessler’s piece The Blue Period (2007) comments on rampant mass media saturation, State sanctioned control societies and social connectivity (Facebook, Twitter, etc…) by creating an immersive kinetic and video drenched panoptical prison, furthering his interest in surveillance, alienation and spectacle. Influenced by “Society as Spectacle” (1967), Guy DeBord’s seminal book critiquing an arising consumer culture, bringing with it a general passivity and individual isolation. The Blue Period displaces the viewer, liberating them and leaving them adrift in a world of constant feedback and infinite regress.
