DESCRIPTION

Dacia Gallery is pleased to present, Unwrapped, a solo exhibition of realistic paintings by Douglas Newton. Newton's paintings use candy, food and other ordinary objects, juxtaposed in fresh, unexpected ways. He captures the colors and textures of objects in oil paint, without following the usual conventions of still life painting.

The paintings are all done directly from nature in oil on canvas. No photographs are used. Newtonfeels that the eye sees many more subtle nuances in light and shadow, than the camera registers. Also, real, three-dimensional objects are much more inspiring to work from than a flat image.

Brilliant color is also a signature quality of the paintings of candy. Oil paint best captures the magical quality of light, with all its attendant reflections, shadows, and subtle graduations of tone. In all these paintings, his emphasis is on color, texture and atmosphere, which give his paintings a delicate soft touch.
