This workshop will provide training in traditional Buon fresco painting. This technique was most popular from the late thirteenth to the mid-sixteenth centuries, but it is still practiced today. This workshop will include a step-by-step tutorial on preparation and execution of a fresco.
Students will see how the plaster is prepared with slaked lime and sand, and how the colors are mixed and applied to the wall. Students will also have the opportunity to try it themselves: from creating a design, to preparing the plaster, to finally painting a panel.
Dean Hartung studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Cleveland Institute of Art; and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. He received a fellowship at La Napoule Art Foundation in France. His paintings have been included in exhibitions organized by a number of galleries and museums. He has been commissioned to create several important murals. He teaches drawing, painting, and mural painting.
