L@TE: Friday Nights @ BAM/PFA: Fires of Unknown Origin

Friday, March 4, 7:30 p.m. (Doors 5 p.m., DJ 6:30 p.m.)

Programmed by Betty Nguyen

This showcase presents three performances by artists whose energies reflect the youthful rebellion and desire of the early 1970s NewYork art scene (think Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Chelsea Hotel). L@TE Programmer Betty Nguyen, the publisher of First Person Magazine, came upon Los Angeles–based sound artist Kevin Greenspon playing an underground show in a parking garage; perched on the ground surrounded by his machinery, he will transport his intricate sounds to BAM/PFA’s concrete “arena.” At a punk house show in Oakland, Nguyen stood on a couch watching Vholtz, Randy Lee Sutherland’s improvisation project influenced by Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart with Bay Area players George Chen, Jonathan Grothman, and Daron Key. The cosmic guitar virtuoso Hubble, Ben Greenberg from the Brooklyn–based band Z’s, was discovered in a kitchen, striking rhythmic chords that will animate Gallery B with a high volume of electric feedback. Alive and independent, these artists are traveling deep within.
